The warmer weather is finally here, and everyone seems to be trying to find and feel their best while taking advantage of nature. Weight management is certainly a big part of it, with everyone trying to increase their exercise and improve their diet, but surprising skin care is another issue that I hear coming up all the time.

Weight management is certainly a big part of it, with everyone trying to increase their exercise and improve their diet, but surprising skin care is another issue that I hear coming up all the time. Not only do we want to strut in these cute summer jeans, we also want our skin to glow as we do it. I’m right?

Maybe it’s time to rethink this skin care routine and focus on nutrition, not formulas. What you eat every day can have a big impact on how you and your skin work.

Which foods are best for this? Let yourself go for a simple summer diet and don’t do it to make you glow year-round.

Best foods for youthful skin

1. Berries

Berries are full of antioxidant compounds. Antioxidants help us fight free radical damage, which is unfortunately an inevitable consequence of the world we live in. Our food, household products, other environmental chemicals, and even stress can generate free radicals that damage our cells. Antioxidants help to turn them off and restore proper balance and function.

2. Cruciferous veggies

Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, bok choy … they are all fantastic when it comes to your skin. They are rich in vitamins A and C, which are important for our skin, and the phytochemicals in cruciferous vegetables can help reduce inflammation and promote estrogen balance, both of which can be a big boost to your epidermis.

3. Wild salmon (and other omega-3 fatty acids)

Healthy fats are the key to healthy cells, and healthy cells are healthy skin. Wild salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, known for its strong role in reducing inflammation. However, there are more sources of omega-3 than salmon. Other animal sources are mackerel, sardines, tuna and anchovies. Vegetable sources are chia seeds, hemp hearts, flax seeds and walnuts.

4. Avocado

This tasty fruit is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants, which help to keep the skin supple and ward off the effects of aging. More reason for some guacamole when the weather warms up!

5. Nuts

Another fantastic source of fat that is helpful for our cells and also contains a variety of skin-protecting antioxidants. Additionally, they are high in fiber that may not seem directly related to your skin, but anything that aids digestion and promotes regular elimination will help detoxify your skin and body.

6. Coconut oil

We’re still on a big kick here. As you can say, getting good sources of healthy fats in your diet is key.  Coconut oil is another of these powerhouse fats. It has strong antimicrobial properties to ward off bacteria throughout the body and can support our immune system. All of this in turn promotes healthier skin. Simple ways to use coconut oil would be mixed with sautees, as fat when baking, or in smoothies. Personally, I like to use fatty coconut milk to make chia seed pudding to get a healthy dose.

7. Bone broth

Liquids are super important to keep cells well hydrated, so bone broth can certainly help, but it’s also an important source of collagen. Collagen, which decreases with age, keeps our skin firm and elastic. Mix as a warm evening drink or in soups or other dishes that call for broth.
